Abbott Wants to Talk about Killing Jobs? Why is His Administration Defunding Apprenticeship Programs?

DALLAS, TX — Career politician Greg Abbott loves to talk a big game about workforce development and training and expanding apprenticeship opportunities when it’s campaign season and he needs to convince voters he’s a champion for working people.

But behind closed doors? Abbott’s Texas Workforce Commission is singing another tune.

In August, the TWC amended its 2028-2029 state budget request to defund nearly $4 million from Texas’s already underfunded Chapter 133 apprenticeship training program, which provides funding to support apprenticeship training programs across the state that work to develop skilled trade workers.

The decision comes as Texas increasingly faces growing demand for highly skilled workers and as Abbott campaigns on providing “historic funding to support career workforce training and programs” and record job growth.

But right on the heels of Labor Day, the contradiction is hard to miss: Abbott can talk all he wants about preparing Texans for the jobs of tomorrow, but on his watch the state is putting the training people need for those jobs at risk.

If Abbott was truly serious about Texas’ workforce, he should stop playing political games, put the money where his mouth is, and restore funding to crucial apprenticeship programs.

“If Greg Abbott wants to call anyone a job killer, he should start with himself and the millions of dollars his administration is cutting from job training programs. Apprenticeships are vital pathways for Texans to get the skills and training they need for good-paying jobs that help them achieve the American dream. Texans don’t need more empty promises from billionaire puppet Greg Abbott. They deserve a governor like Gina Hinojosa who will always put working people first and actually invest in the workforce Abbott claims to support,” said Texas Democratic Party Spokesman Jacob Long.
